Yuri’s Night is an international celebration of space exploration, named after fearless Yuri Gagarin, who first flew in space on April 12, 1961. King Billy, a space enthusiast himself, has ordered his Scholars to retrieve 10 phrases about space that everyone ought to know, remember and spread around during Yuri’s night. So, here we go Citizens!

PHRASE NUMBER 10 “Beam me up Scottie!”

“Beam me up Scotty” made its way into popular culture from the science fiction television series Star Trek. Interesting fact: The exact phrase was never actually spoken in any Star Trek television episode or film, with “Scotty, beam us up” or just “beam me up” being close calls.

PHRASE NUMBER 9 “Ground Control to Major Tom”

Major Tom is a fictional astronaut referenced more famously in David Bowie’s song “Space Oddity”. One of the most beautiful songs ever written for space, forever to be played on Earth!

PHRASE NUMBER 8 “I would like to die on Mars. Just not on impact.”

Every space phrases list would be incomplete without a tribute to one of the greatest visionaries out there. Elon Musk states that he would really like to die on Mars – just not on impact.

PHRASE NUMBER 7 “In space no one can hear you scream.”

Taken from the 1979 science fiction horror film “Alien” directed by Ridley Scott, it still brings chills today and we think it will always do! Interestingly enough, the phrase was only shown in the trailer of the film.

PHRASE NUMBER 6 “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon.”

This is how it all started. John F. Kennedy’s speech to the Congress on May 25, 1961, set it all in motion!

PHRASE NUMBER 5 “May the Force be with you.”

We needn’t elaborate on this one, right? You can see, however, in the clip below how many times the “Force” has been used in the Star Trek universe!

PHRASE NUMBER 4 “Pale blue dot.”

On February 14, 1990, engineers turned the Voyager spacecraft around for one last look at Earth, from a distance of 6 billion kilometers. This motivated astronomer Carl Sagan to write one of the more poignant pieces ever on space.

PHRASE NUMBER 3 “Houston, we have a problem!”

The original dialogue:
ASTRONAUT Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here.
MISSION CONTROL This is Houston. Say again, please.
ASTRONAUT Uh, Houston, we’ve had a problem.
And Tom Hanks’ version:

PHRASE NUMBER 2 “A small step for a man. A giant leap for mankind!”

Neil Armstrong’s most famous words.

PHRASE NUMBER 1 “God bless all of you on the good Earth.”

Number one on our list! On Christmas Eve, 1968, the astronauts of Apollo 8 did a live television broadcast from lunar orbit and sent a message back to Earth, which will always be remembered for its kindness and humanity.
